It’s hard to hack Wi-Fi, but it’s not impossible, if you know what you’re doing. (Photo by Patrick Lux/Getty Images) How to stop your Wi-Fi getting hacked If you’re trying to get on to a private network while you wait at the train station it’s probably not going to be worth the effort. They would also need to be able to use the command line and have a few hours spare. If a potential hacker did use one of these programmes – and remember, it’s illegal to hack someone’s Wi-Fi – they should run a Linux distro from one of their computer’s USB drives to avoid the malware. There are hundreds of software programmes that claim to be able to crack Wi-Fi passwords, but security experts say they often come with malware and use tracking cookies that will monitor your installation and how you use the programme. You would need so much patience and knowledge that it’s unlikely to be worth your while. This is where it gets more difficult – even for professional hackers. Replace network name with the exact name of the network you want to access. Type “ security find-generic-password -wa network name“. If you’re on a mac you will be able to do the same thing with Terminal. If the network password hasn’t been changed, you can copy and paste it when you connect to the network again. In the text that appears, scroll to Security Settings for Key Content – this is the stored password for that network. Replace the network name with the name of the network you want to connect to. Now type “ netsh wlan show profile name=”network name” key=clear“. This will show a list of all the networks that your computer has connected to. Right click and select ‘Run as administrator.Ī black window will open. Good news: you will probably be able to use the command prompt in Windows to get online. In other words, you’ve forgotten your password and can’t find it written down anywhere.
